Durham University and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust Joint Special Interest Group for Psychosis is open to all staff working in either the Trust or University. However, it will be of particular interest to those staff working in ‘psychosis services’ or who are involved in research within the field. A warm welcome is also extended to any service users who would like to attend. The group meets on a regular basis to discuss a wide range of topics and speakers.
The next meeting will feature a presentation by Dr Hilary Powell and Professor Corinne Saunders (Durham University) entitled ‘Voice-Hearing in the Middle Ages: A Cultural Exploration’, and will be held on Wednesday January 30th 2013 from 5.30 – 7PM in the Holgate Centre, Grey College, Durham University (8 on this map).
Hilary and Corinne will discuss the way in which voice-hearing had a very different cultural frame in the Middle Ages. Using examples of voice-hearing from medieval saints’ lives, as well as from medieval mystics and from fiction, they will explore how auditory hallucinations related to those experienced in other sensory modalities, and will reflect on how hearing voices was often considered as a positive experience, to be actively solicited.
