Giotto_-_Legend_of_St_Francis_-_-19-_-_Stigmatization_of_St_FrancisThe next seminar in the 2016 Hearing the Voice Research Seminar series, featuring a presentation by Professor Chris Cook (Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University) on ‘Hearing Voices in the Christian Mystical Tradition’, will take place in the SCR in Hatfield College, Durham University (number 20 on this map) on Thursday 16 June 2016, 5 pm – 7 pm.

Abstract: Christian mysticism embraces a diverse range of religious experiences. For William James, ineffability was one of the hallmarks of mystical experience and it has often been the case that such experiences have neither involved the hearing of a voice, nor have they been easily conveyed in words. Despite this, the literature is rich with examples of written accounts of mystical experience, and many such experiences are reported as having included the hearing of a voice. In this seminar a series of such examples will be considered, illustrating some of the different ways in which voices contribute significantly to, and interpret, mystical experience.

The Hearing the Voice Research Seminar series is designed to provide a platform for HtV researchers to share the detailed findings of their research and gain feedback from a wider audience.
