Titled ‘Kinds of Thinking and Content Determination’, this presentation will explore the nature of linguistic and non-linguistic thinking and its implication for the representational and conscious character of thought.

Linguistic and non-linguistic thinking are two distinct forms of cognition. Paradigmatically, linguistic thinking is exemplified in forms of thinking that involve inner speech, and non-linguistic thinking is present in imagistic thinking and what has been called unsymbolized thinking. Marta Jorba (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU) will address the issue of how the content of thinking is determined, both in linguistic and unsymbolized thinking. This presentation will explore two approaches to the question, the phenomenal intentionality view and the sensory inner speech view and will argue that both views are problematic on different grounds. It will then propose a third approach that accounts for the determination of conscious thought content appealing to linguistic production mechanisms. Finally, some implications of the view for the representational and conscious character of thought will be discussed.
