House of LordsHearing the Voice is delighted to feature in an event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Durham University’s Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) that will take place at the House of Lords tomorrow evening.

Transforming the Way We Think will showcase the IAS’s various activities and research themes over the last decade, and celebrate its leading role in the promotion of interdisciplinary thinking within Durham University, nationally and internationally.

The IAS is a great friend and supporter of Hearing the Voice. Charles Fernyhough held a fellowship in 2008 as part of the Institute’s Being Human research theme, and the seeds for our project were laid in ‘Thinking with Feeling’ – a series of IAS workshops exploring different disciplinary approaches to the role of emotions in thinking. The Institute continues to support our work by providing a home for our fortnightly Voice Club meetings, at which our Durham-based team gets together to explore an aspect of voice-hearing from different academic, clinical, cultural and personal perspectives. We’ve also partnered with the IAS to produce a number of workshops on interdisciplinary approaches to human experience, including ‘An Exchange of Minds: So what do you believe?’ with the Academy of Finland, and reflected on the challenges and triumphs of these interdisciplinary collaborations through our unique initiative, Working Knowledge.

We look forward to joining our colleagues from the IAS tomorrow night to commemorate their many achievements. Clearly plenty to celebrate and much of which to be proud!
