‘A glitch-cabaret of haunted circuitry and phantom language.’

Taking its name and inspiration from Konstantin Raudive’s 1970s experiments into hearing unidentified voices in electronic interference, EVP is a brand-new programme of performance works divining the role of voices-from-beyond in the creative process. Whether muses, ancestors-cum-confidantes, the subconscious or ephemeral static, the project asks how voices of the unknown play out in the creative process and how can performance and technology condense these rare murmurs into revelatory moments.

Commissioned works

The tour features commissions from four core performers:

Time Out Award Winner Ross Sutherland divines a new work in spoken word and reclaimed video from the detritus of pop culture and decaying memory, continuing his acclaimed series of short-form performances. “a Dantean spin through the circles of heaven and hell” – The Wire.

Through her signature virtuoso loops and layers of words, speech, quotations and vocal play Hannah Silva explores psychologist and erstwhile medium Stan Gooch’s 1972 opus Total Man – spanning morality, magic and macro-theories of personality.

Fresh from their spring 2013 tour with Everything Everything, Mersey five-piece Outfit present a new work inspired by the 1990 trial of Judas Priest. They explore the hidden messages in music and the artform’s potential to manipulate, combining conventional instrumentation with field recordings, guitar feedback and fierce processing. Their first new material since winning BBC’s ‘EP of the Year’ in 2012.

Tate and London Sinfionetta commissioned poet and artist SJ Fowler presents Electric Dada. The sorrowful centenary of Dada looms electric in this eulogy for the lost art of mocking the shrill, shrieking ghouls that are war and commerce. In song, video & poetry, SJ Fowler performs a dead dodo dada language as an attempt to resurrect a happy ghost.

EVP will feature guest commissions from local performers on selected dates:

Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Artist Hetain Patel presents a brand new piece on identity formation through language and movement; critically acclaimed novelist Richard Milward (Apples, Ten Storey Love Song) debuts new work; and sound artist Honor Gavin presents 0121 Stimmtausch, a play of voices drawing on telephonic exchanges past and present, Birmingham’s tele-history and voice exchanges in music.
